8 first steps to starting your Avon business

Essentials to action

  1. Set up your personal AVON ONLINE STORE and share to Facebook and other social media that you have.

  2. Get the AVON ON app on your phone and have a look around the app. Find the digital brochure and share this on things like WhatsApp, messenger, email etc. to all your friends and family.

  3. Join me on FACEBOOK so that I can put you into the Team Facebook groups for help and support.

  4. Find the AVON CONNECT on your rep account under the Training and Development tab. Go to Get Started and have a look at the 90 day rep training plan. (You will need to log in with your account number and password) Start watching the videos. They are designed to do a little bit at a time and then action what you have learned.  Lots of new incentives to get off to a good start.

  5. Write down a list of people that you know that you could give a brochure to or to send them a link to the digital version.

  6. Have a think about where you could start delivering your brochures around where you live and how much time you have to do your business each week.

  7. Read the welcome pack from me when it arrives with lots of ideas and info in to help you.

  8. Don't panic! I am here to help and this can all be done at your own pace.

Retailing with brochures

Quick Start Up Guide

Your kit usually arrives 3-4 days from opening your account and ordering.

  • Write your name and phone number on all the order forms. You could also add your store link in the space provided.

  • Put brochures and customer order forms in the Avon poly bags. (pack all the same as that way you will know if someone has looked at it)

  • Choose what day you will collect, write the day in capitals and bold on a slip of paper and place in front of the bags. Leave for about 2-3 days. This is long enough for the first time to a new potential customer. (examples of day slips in the resources section)

  • If you choose to cover some homes - plan your route. Have a notepad and pen to write down where you have left a book. You are given a round book in your starter kit.

  • Go out and place your brochures with friends, family and neighbours and knock, step back and ask "Hi, I've just started with Avon, would you like to see the latest brochure?" I would advise against just putting them through letterboxes as you will lose quite a few that way. Close to the end of the month you can put them out through letterboxes as you have nothing to lose if you don't get them back but could pick up a customer.

I have found that most people do not mind us knocking and asking if they would like a book rather than them just receiving it through the door.

  • Pick up the brochures when you said that you were going to. Be reliable and people will take notice of that.

  • Use the round book or your notebook to record if they have ordered, looked at it or it is missing. If it is missing you can put a slip in to say you will be back tomorrow if they can just pop it outside so as not to disturb them. (a template is available on the resources section of this website)

  • Important! check before you leave the premises that the customer has put their address on the order form. There is nothing worse than getting home to find that you have a wonderful order but no address! It happens!

  • Go back the next day to collect any missing ones. This is really worth doing as people can forget to put it out on the correct day but might want to order.

  • When you get home remove any orders and repack the bags with new order forms and day slips. Put them back out again to a new street, area etc.

  • Keep repeating these steps to build your customer base.

  • It is up to you how many times you go to a house if they have not ordered. I usually try 3 times if they have looked at it and twice if they haven't even taken it out the bag.

  • Start to enter your order and SAVE but don't submit until it is large enough. The amount of free deliveries we get per month changes so keep an eye out on your newsletters from Avon and on the Facebook groups to keep updated. It is usually 2 free deliveries as long as over £30.

  • Get familiar with your brochure and know the special offers and free gifts as quite often the customer doesn't put the free gift code. Customers can often put the wrong code for the item that they want.

  • Be aware of the incentives that Avon are offering new reps. These can change every month.

  • When your delivery arrives via Parcelforce tick off the items against the invoice to check they are all there. Put in an Avon bag and deliver the goods. If you have their phone number you can give them a ring and let them know when you are coming and to remind them how much it is. If you want to offer online banking or PayPal then you can let the customer know at this stage.
Collect the cash if they haven't paid you online.

  • Do not hand over the goods to the customer if they have not paid you.
Pay Avon for the goods, online with a debit or credit card or a Post Office. I believe there is a small charge if you do it through the PO.

  • Repeat and do it all over again! You can use the old books to find new customers but you need to put a note on them to say that they are out of date but if they would like a current book to contact you.

Retailing online

  • Once you have opened your store on your rep account you need to look for the AVON ON app on your phone.

  • You will see a digital brochure cover that will allow you to SHARE the link on all your social media accounts including WhatsApp and messenger and emails. This is your own personal brochure linked to your account. Please check that it says your name on the screen. It will have 'you are shopping with Karin Harris' for example.

  • You can always send the link to me to check everything is directed to you or try it out on your family! It's a good way to get them to have a look at your digital brochure!

  • Familiarise yourself with the app and scroll through to see all the product images that you can share.
Use your online store product information to get the wording for your post and promote across social media.

  • Watch the video (Learning Hub, Social Savvy) on setting up a Facebook Page and Group and the benefits of doing so.

  • Tell everyone you know that you have just started Avon and you would appreciate their support in looking through the digital brochure or visiting your online store.
Ask friends and family if they could share a post on their timeline about you starting doing Avon.
Post some adverts in local buying and selling groups. Search and join all the local ones. You can expand to UK wide in time as your online shop can go anywhere! Do check that it is alright to post Avon as some do say no business posts.

  • Once you have your Page and group set up you can have a look at the app Avon Social. This is a service Avon offer for free to have automated posts scheduled for the week ahead. You will need to have a Facebook Page or Group set up for the posts to go to. You can also schedule posts to Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and buy and selling groups that you are admin of.

  • Work through the training on the Learning Hub to get social savvy and understand all the ways that you can earn working online.

  • Make sure that you have joined our team's Facebook groups so that you can keep up with the latest information.

  • Check your emails for updates and special offers and your weekly newsletter.

  • Familiarise yourself with your rep account and know how to check your invoices, tracking and your commission.

Best of both worlds is doing online and offline.
You may want to concentrate on one more than the other but there is a place for both in your business and they compliment each other very successfully. It is good to learn how to promote online and to have your shop open for business. Someone anywhere in the UK could find you and order online and you would get the commission. No having to deliver and collect the money as it has been done for you.
